If you don't prefer Unity - the default desktop for Ubuntu 11.04 or Gnome 2.2 - the default desktop for 10.04/10.10, you can install several other desktops/window managers each with their own...
I've randomly had this happen every so often when not logging out/rebooting for long periods of time, and a logout or reboot seems to have purged the files.
Not sure why however.

I can second Clonezilla, as I've used it in the past successfully.
If you're looking for something with a simple interface however, it doesn't get much more simple than Redo.
