After all it was the client at fault, not on the serverside (which I assumed due to new DHCP server).

You could try Optifine, it's a mod that extends the tweaking ability of Minecraft. Which allows you to decrease the req. of Minecraft, or vice versa.

Do you mean while you play or after you've exited the game? If ingame then try change resolution ingame, it might be that you screen doesn't support the resolution the game is trying to set.

You can use winetricks to install other components in your wine-environment. Such as directX9 etc...
