[ubuntu] Re: Alternative to Lenovo W510?

TBH I haven't tried, I wasn't even properly aware of it, so doing some reading now.

Obviously it's quite fast without the turbo mode, but I'll see if I can enable this later today and see what...

[ubuntu] Re: Alternative to Lenovo W510?

Yes. I use a displayport-to-dvi adapter, and have had no problems in this regard.

    Ensure you have

    Option "TwinView" "true"

As part of your xorg.conf "device" section.

[ubuntu] Re: Alternative to Lenovo W510?

Update the BIOS whenever you want. I used the bootable ISO from Lenovo, and there's also a Windows exe to do the same thing (I think).

The Thinkwiki site is all about the W510... but not well...

[ubuntu] Re: Alternative to Lenovo W510?

Nearly flawlessly, but only with a little extra configuration.

The main things you need to do are:
    - Update the W510 BIOS to the absolute latest version
    - Install the most recent stable nvidia...

[ubuntu] Re: Alternative to Lenovo W510?

I've got the W510, and I have it because I couldn't find an alternative I liked :) I wasn't willing to go to a 17-incher however, which will give you more flexibility.

If you don't order the FHD...

[SOLVED] Re: KDM fails, startx works just fine

For future searchers, I solved this one.

There are artifacts of old packages remaining around. Specifically bits and pieces of kdm-kde4 (a transitional package) and kde-guidance (more worrying as...
  7. [kubuntu] Re: Will KDE work without users in the sudo file? (bc it relies on kdesudo so much)

Maybe this will do what you want, but it's a bit old:
    http://consistencies.net/20051018/fixing-kdesu-problems-in-kubuntu/

However we now have "kdesudo", not "kdesu" -- I don't know if it will act...
  8. [kubuntu] Re: Will KDE work without users in the sudo file? (bc it relies on kdesudo so much)

kdesu can be configured to work in both SU and SUDO mode. It's in SUDO mode by default in kubuntu.

To change this, I'm pretty sure a ~/.kde/share/config/kdesurc file looking like the following...

[SOLVED] KDM fails, startx works just fine

    As per subject.

When I start up, the nvidia splash shows and then the X server crashes. This repeats itself a bit, but ultimately I get a console login.

After logging in from console, I can...

[kubuntu] Re: Help! KDE 4.2 screwed up my system!

It's a packaging bug in any case, so you should report it to the kubuntu developers on http://bugs.launchpad.net, rather than directly to the KDE developers who are not responsible in this case.

[ubuntu] Re: Old xorg.conf scroll fix won't work in 8.10.

I'm now using KDE 4.2, and *most* of the time it's fine. Every once in a while after resuming it is back to it's old behaviour.

Not sure what other people are finding.

[ubuntu] Re: Old xorg.conf scroll fix won't work in 8.10.

I got this working with the FDI file on a T61P, however I seem to lose my settings after a suspend-resume cycle.

Scrolling with the trackpoint stops working, and using xinput to try and get it...
