  1. Re: Munich to distribute Linux CDs to get people to ditch Windows XP

This is really interesting since RAM is one of the more common limitations of old computers. How much RAM are we talking about here?
  2. Re: Munich to distribute Linux CDs to get people to ditch Windows XP

Some interesting statistics. Here is another source http://www.met.sjsu.edu/~clements/met112_FA09_lecture/Carbon%20Footprints.ppt. There are some additional carbon costs to factor in with the laptop:...
  3. Re: Munich to distribute Linux CDs to get people to ditch Windows XP

I have been through both. Failed Ubuntu release-upgrades and failed Windows service pack applications. The cure in both cases was to re-install. The cause in many cases was not even due to the OS...
  4. Re: Munich to distribute Linux CDs to get people to ditch Windows XP

Upgrading Lubuntu to the next version is really not that different from applying an XP Service pack. In fact it may be easier. Windows XP without a service pack reached end of life back in 2005. The...

  6. Poll: Re: Question For Those Who Use Both Microsoft Office & LibreOffice

It is the wrong approach. A much better approach is to learn Libre Office on its own well, with a focus on learning the concepts behind a word processor, a spreadsheet, a presentation program etc.,...

  10. Re: If MS made a linux version that ran Windows programs natively

Why not simply run Windows in a virtual machine under GNU/Linux? For a very large number of Windows programs this is a very simple and effective solution. Wine is of course also an option.

Re: Install Windows 8 after Ubuntu and Windows 7

This is a simple way to tell what is happening. While the hard drive may be un-bootable there is a very good chance that the files are still there. Ubuntu does read NTFS so unless the files were...

Re: Microsoft to release Office for Linux ?

On the surface this looks very much as a double edged sword for Microsoft. One thing to keep in mind is that the margins for Windows in the OEM channel are getting razor thin as the price of hardware...
  16. Re: Will Gimp and Inkscape work on Windows 8 RT (surface)?

No. The reason is that Windows 8 RT is a censored operating system where only those applications approved by Microsoft via their store can be installed. It is very much the same as IOS in this...
