well how big are your home folders?
b/c a really quick idea i have is to just copy your home folder onto an ext drive or the other partition from a live cd?

yes you need to mount the drive.
you should be able to do this by going to places-->hard drive name(click)
once found its under /media

ok, i was dual booting vista+8.04 and everything was working, was going to temp uninstall ubuntu, so in vista, i deleted partition until it was "unallocated space"
