    Thanks cd tech. That works fine for the main and restricted packages, however the packages in /pool on the cd/flash drive (mainly backports, which are what I needed :X) aren't in the "standard"...

    I recently installed 8.10 from a flash drive, and would like to use the thumb drive as a repository in a way similar to using a cd with apt-cdrom. I've looked around and still can't figure it out. :(

    Ok, figured it out.

    I didn't let the loopback interface through iptables. ](*,)

    iptables -A INPUT -i lo -j ACCEPT

    solves the problem, as well as another I was having with a printer.

    I've found a temporary workaround.

    I put this in /etc/rc.local
    ( sleep 20; iptables-restore /etc/ipt-rules; /etc/init.d/dhcp3-server restart ) &

    basically it says to fork a process, wait 20...
