Can you please try the following:
Check if the v4l1compat.so file exists:

Hey, sorry for late reply. Similar to jsevi83, I don't even have an alsa-base.conf anymore.
$ ls /etc/modprobe.d/
framebuffer_blacklist.conf modprobe.conf usb-load-ehci-first.conf
$ cat...
Hm, I remember needing that line with the first version of the 2.6.38 kernel to get the microphone working but just removed the line and the headphone muting and the microphone are both working fine,...
You could try just leaving all the sound modules/packages as the ubuntu default and adding the line to the end of /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf:
options snd-hda-intel model=asus
and then:

Not sure if this is useful to many people yet, but might be in the future. Also, for me this was done on Arch Linux not Ubuntu, but I imagine that it should work for any distro.
On my K52J using...
Good to know mahalos, I've upgraded to 10.10 (Asus K52J) and am in a similar situation to you.
My biggest annoyance is the sound - it fails to build the linuxant.deb for me. (same problem as this...
Hi, sorry no help. But I also have exactly the same error.
To at least get your sound back: apt-get remove the linuxant package and then reinstall the linux-image package which if I understand...
jsevi83 - I'm using 64-bit and despite the problems with suspend and hdmi sound i have no unexplained freezes so far.
You can only use 3gb ram with 32-bit so I recommend 64.
jsevi83 - you shouldn't need the hda-verb program to get the speakers muting just the script that xtrman posted. Should make the steps a bit simpler.
I installed both as well but found it still...
xtrman - you are a legend. Works for me on an Asus K52J.
I added the pinsensed command to /etc/rc.local as well so it auto-starts. I also needed to use g++ in place of gcc.
You could add the line into /etc/rc.local which is a file that is run by root at the end of the boot process.
You shouldn't need the sudo part of the command as it will run as root anyway.
...
sudo apt-get install libsdl1.2debian-pulseaudio
Seems to do the trick. Apparently this is fine to do in Ubuntu as it uses pulseaudio anyway, maybe not so good in K/X'buntus.
Should be fixed in...
I have the exact same problems with Wesnoth. Tried running it from the command line to see if it output any useful info but nothing special.
9.10, 64-bit - interested if anyone has solved it.
This is exactly what I'd also like to do - I've placed the line in my .vimrc and tried typing w!! which seems to do nothing. What am I missing?
