    [ubuntu] Re: kdm or lightdm

Kubuntu 14.04: lightdm gives me a duplicated login box, 1 on each screen. just fine.
  2. [all variants] Re: new kernel vsn caused dkms failure, depmod error

As it was for me. Have now been using 12.04 for a year and 4 days.
  3. [SOLVED] Re: OpenVPN connects to VPN but no internet (Ubuntu 10.10 64-bit)

    A few thoughts:
    a. Firewall is not its own firewall - it is another gui interface to iptables.
    b. I tried briefly to get kvpnc to work - but couldn't get it to work - can't remember why. So I...
  4. [SOLVED] Re: OpenVPN connects to VPN but no internet (Ubuntu 10.10 64-bit)

I am not completely sure of this, but I think that procedure defeats 2 of the 3 purposes of a VPN.

If you are using the VPN just to access a company or private network - then that method is fine....
  5. [SOLVED] Re: Slow slideshow screensaver in Oneiric and Precise

Correct indeed. I had had this problem for so long, and tested so many fixes, I lost sight of a few basics.
(eg I had set my screensaver image dir to have just one image to stop the transitions)....
  6. [SOLVED] Re: Slow slideshow screensaver in Oneiric and Precise

I spoke too soon. Also happens with the open driver on the intel graphics card.
  7. [SOLVED] Re: Slow slideshow screensaver in Oneiric and Precise

Further to the above, I have now installed 12.04 on 3 machines:
. a Precision workstation with an NVidia Quadro Fx1400 card, driver vsn 295.49
. a Thinkpad with an NVidia NVS3100M card, driver...
  8. [ubuntu] Re: Dual boot ubuntu 12.04 and xp with ubuntu already installed

With Wz XP, I think you usually need to install it first. The simplest solution is usually to install Wz first, then install Ubuntu. Ubuntu will see Wz is there and guide you to where to install...
  9. [all variants] Re: new kernel vsn caused dkms failure, depmod error

The problem in this thread is that the new kernel vsn caused dkms install failure, due to a depmod error.
    a. the problem is with is with 12.04 only
    b. the system does boot
    c. and firefox is...
  10. [all variants] new kernel vsn caused dkms failure, depmod error

Did a clean install of Kubuntu 12.04 two days ago.
This evening it said there were available updates, namely kernel version 3.2.0-31. In more detail:

The following NEW packages will be...
  11. [SOLVED] Re: Slow slideshow screensaver in Oneiric and Precise

fwiw just in case bravo sierra echo is still following this:

    a. Agree it is a pain. On my Preision workstation with a Quadro FX graphics card, some transitions look like they will take an hour. ...

[all variants] Re: Kernel Boot messages broken

I, and many others (do a search), have tried 8,746 different combinations.
The problem is not that I, deliberately or by default, have suppressed the messages.
As the description makes clear, a...

[all variants] Re: Kernel Boot messages broken

    Thanks, yes, I saw.
Bugs used to get discussion etc much more quickly,
but 2 weeks is ok as it is not urgent.

    Welcome to X/K/L/Ubuntu.
I personally use Kubuntu as it has much more power and...

[all variants] Re: Kernel Boot messages broken

Seems unlikely - there has been no activity on the bug, hasn't been confirmed or assigned.

To file a bug on Launchpad, you have to specify the package against which it is filed. Not being sure,...

  16. [SOLVED] Re: OpenVPN connects to VPN but no internet (Ubuntu 10.10 64-bit)

    ahhhhhhhhhhhhhh. My head is full.
though in fact it may be easier to learn iptables than to keep learning new firewalls (10.10 we had guarddog).
  17. [SOLVED] Re: OpenVPN connects to VPN but no internet (Ubuntu 10.10 64-bit)

For simple humans (like me) who want to keep firestarter but who will understand iptables about 3 weeks after hell grows cold:

"Firestarter 1.0 does not support VPN configurations without some...

    [ubuntu] Re: usb sound passthrough

    Nice news.
Any idea if this will be in 12.04?

As I still (barely) pass my sanity test,
I will not be un/re-installing pulse or alsa by hand.

    [ubuntu] Re: usb sound passthrough

Your post helped me with my own usb DAC issues.
Here is an alternate solution if you don't want to install mpd
    (or disable pulseaudio)

[all variants] Re: Kernel Boot messages broken

Am not using themes or grub background images, so that won't be the problem.

Am using grub 1.99-rc1 in 11.04
whereas 10.10 (which boots correctly) uses 1.98.
However both are grub2, so it is not...

[kde] Re: Yakuake not saving bash history

    Yes, could be.
The history bug only appeared in 11.04, was not there in 10.10
    (just double checked it).

However I will wait for at least 12.04 before I update.
Too time consuming (and too much...

[kde] Re: Yakuake not saving bash history

I think you are assuming my Yakuake is broken.
But this happens on 3 machines, all clean installs.

So this is unlikely to be the reason.
