    That wasn't it. I changed both ends one at a time all the way to the lowest indicated setting (-70) and logged in/out in case I needed to to put the settings in effect, and neither of them decreased...

    Well, it's all done and all seems to be working. The equalizer seems to have improved things somewhat, but I know I'm going to have to go into the configuration file and change some of the numbers...
