Why did you press "n"? Doing this terminates the install.
Just press "y", and go on. There's nothing wrong with compiling, it needs to be compiled because vmware doen't support ubuntu as an host-os....
It stays free, anyway it says so in the FAQ.
Yeah, but that involves running vmware with root, wich is not a good idea.

I just ignored sessions, its greyed out here too.
You could also have rebooted with the rescue option in grub and used "nano -w file.name" (I think nano is easier than vi).

If you are bored with Ubuntu and want something more difficult go for fedora.
Its more for the power-user,(not as much als gentoo but still).
