Thank you for your help again. Instead wasting more time trying to repair 12.10 I reinstalled 12.04 as I was quite happy with it. I think leaving out unity 2D in the new release was a big mistake....

Hi I had the same problem after I upgraded to the latest kernel, so I edited /boot/grub/menu.lst and reverted to 'Ubuntu 9.10, kernel 2.6.31-17-generic' and since then the problem seems gone.
