instead of editing ~/.config/user-dirs.dirs you need to edit ~/.gtk-bookmarks. user-dirs handles the user folders, not the bookmarks.

I'm running Ubuntu 10.04 and I seem to be having the same problem.
The error message I keep getting when running gnome-screensaver-preferences is:

This is purely based on my own experience but when using Songbird 1.4.3, which doesn´t support the DBus Bird add-on anymore (it only goes up till 1.1.1).
