Have you tried re-installing it? To do that, go to your home folder, and do Ctrl+H. Look for the folder called ".minecraft". Just delete it, then run the Minecraft.jar file that you downloaded from...

Okay i've had that problem, just install it from skype.com, from there it will open the Software Center. That fixed it for me!
