    Did you try with any other file system type? In my case with the same USB SATA bridge, everything including the partition table gets corrupted. But mine works fine under Windows and Ubuntu 12.10.

    There is a Disk Utility in ubuntu. Locate it in the menu. You can see the partition layout. Although I suggest you install and use gparted if you want to edit the partitions.

    I hope USB debugging is not disabled in your phone. As it is not working with live cd also. Did you try restarting the phone? Is adbd running in the phone?

    $adb kill-server
    $sudo adb devices

    See if your device gets listed. If so, you can use adb shell. I used to get the same issues without root privileges.
