  1. [ubuntu] Re: Ubuntu 10.04 Lucid Lynx Network WiFi slow speed

I believe this is related to this bug. The wading-through-treacle behavior only seems to happen with WPA -- it's fine with WEP in my experience. The solution in the 35th reply to that bug -- viz...
  2. [ubuntu] Re: BCM43xx + 2.6.31-14 kernel = fail -- any ideas?

(Bump.) Any ideas about what next, anyone?
  3. [ubuntu] Re: BCM43xx + 2.6.31-14 kernel = fail -- any ideas?

Thanks, I knew I had done something stupid and obvious. This at least means that the computer can see the card, but it still doesn't work with the 2.6.31 kernel.

    No luck there.

    Those...
  4. [ubuntu] BCM43xx + 2.6.31-14 kernel = fail -- any ideas?

I've just updated the last of my computers (you know, the old one that always springs some sort of nasty surprise on you -- I'm sure everyone has one) to Karmic. And the BCM4303 wireless card doesn't...
  5. [ubuntu] Bizarre X/GDM/GNOME behaviour after crash

Disclaimer 1: I'm running Jaunty, so I know it's all my fault.

Disclaimer 2: I've got a separate /home partition on the machine in question, so I'm not worried about data loss. I'm just curious if...

    [ubuntu] Toshiba NB100 suspend/sleep issue

    http://james.dowden.googlepages.com/Screenshot-Power.png

As you can probably see from the above screenshot, when I've got my netbook plugged in (for use as a radio), I don't want it to decide to...

    Re: [SOLVED] Bahn 3.84

The solution was simple: add -nfc to the end of the command to execute the program. It's now in the BAHN FAQ at jbss.de too.

Re: Mac-style Menu Bar for GTK and Java/Swing applications!

Here is a screenshot of what happens when this tries to live alongside KDE, if anyone's interested:

Re: Mac-style Menu Bar for GTK and Java/Swing applications!

Completely unsurprisingly, this program doesn't work quite right in KDE (I actually only noticed the wrongness by having a play with the latest version of GNOME in a fit of boredom, getting fed up,...
  11. Re: Join the fight against malicious commands given to new users

That's a myth. Try it some time -- it will tell you in Billyspeak that it can't unmount the drive.

del has switches, just as rm does. To get the same effect as -rf, you need /S (include...

Poll: Re: Tell me what is better - GNOME or KDE?

Well, two, how I have it configured, but that just shows another aspect of my preferences...

Anyway, before I start, I should like to make clear that I mean no personal criticism of any particular...
  13. Poll: Re: Tell me what is better - GNOME or KDE?

In words of one syllable, yes. I've no problems with either various memory sticks or my XD card reader in either 7.04 or 7.10.
  14. Poll: Re: Tell me what is better - GNOME or KDE?

I too doubt there's any such thing as clean or correct. I love KDE; other people love GNOME; still other people love Xfce; and some troglodytes somewhere probably love something I can scarcely recall...

Poll: Re: Tell me what is better - GNOME or KDE?

But you raise a more serious point: I'm sorry if this is slightly OT (and if it sounds uncharacteristically GNOME-fanboyish), but there are severe usability problems with overly large threads in this...

    Re: KDE Applications

You may well be unfamiliar with what Konqueror's image view does. It doesn't stuff up the directory listing with irregularly sized icons, and it enlarges the selection. It's something I find...

    Re: Bahn 3.84

Funnily enough I'd already done that, and all it really says is that someone had failed even more spectacularly to get a previous version to work a couple of years ago, which is fairly useless as...

    [SOLVED] Bahn 3.84

Has anyone managed to get BAHN to work (with WINE or something else)? There seems to be some clipboard issue, and I'm stumped.
  19. Poll: Re: Why is KDE such a sore issue?

Sorry -- my language was a bit woolly there as I couldn't see a preference, but I hadn't exactly dug very deep to find one! I wouldn't say that it needed expansion (its brevity is a virtue) or...
  20. Poll: Re: Why is KDE such a sore issue?

http://www.psychocats.net/ubuntu/kdegnome is a fairly nice relatively unbiased comparison.

There is also a fairly comprehensive article by Bruce Byfield at:...

    Re: KDE Applications

    I use:

Games: KSirtet, KMahjongg, KReversi, KBattleship, KMines, Kolor Lines, KPatience (I probably enjoy procrastination too much)
Graphics: KolourPaint (yes, I used to like a similar M$ program...

Re: KDE 4.0 Beta 1 Available Now!

    Default, i.e. supported, i.e. stable.

Then the release schedules are broken. It has been suggested before that there should be a delay of 7.10 to, say, 7.12 (which would not be unprecedented),...
