I have Crunchbang installed on an old P4 with 512mb of RAM, and it screams. I love it (and so do my daughters, as it is their computer.) I say give it a go, and enjoy -- Openbox is fun to use once...
Agreed...nVidia has (at least in the past) worked out of the box with Linux. I have used nVidia for the past 4 years and not looked back.
Good luck!
I use only Ubuntu, and I play around with Arch -- loving it so far. No windows (at home that is) for me. Even my kids and wife use Ubuntu, and don't even know the difference.

You know...I can't believe I never thought of doing this...I think I will do this just to play around and test it out. Sounds neat -- thanks for the reminder of a cool feature!
I to run the Karmic version...and it runs great.
Rhythmbox...although my needs are simple. It works great in managing my 5,000+ music library, and syncing with my ipod.
Good luck!
Crunchbang is a great project...I have it running on an old PC of mine. It uses Openbox as the window manager, and as you have found you will need to right click to find your apps, etc. Take a look...
http://www.system76.com/ is a great site that ONLY sells laptops, desktops, etc with Ubuntu. Good luck!

Do you have the same issues when playing music, etc straight from your PC?
It sounds like you need to make the changes as root...try opening up your nvidia settings as sudo. Once you have made your changes, make sure you click on the button that saves it to your xorg.conf...

I use a program called Ushare...it works great. I am able to use my Xbox 360 to browse all of my movies, pictures, and music that are located on my hard drive on my Ubuntu box. Check this link out...
Thanks for the how-to...I saw your screenshot and fell in love with it. I currently run #! (an openbox ubuntu based distro) on an extra old box I have laying around. For this box, I am...
If your computer is hanging as in freezing...you might want to boot up into your bios and check your CPU temp, and monitor that for a few min. I had this issue the other day with an old box of...
Well, I killed pulse audio and that did nothing...I even went back through the OP just to make sure of everything. I found a few ALSA packages that I did not have installed...so I installed them via...
via a digital fiber cable...it was working perfectly for the past 8 months...ever since I built this box.
Well, I have finally had a bit more time to troubleshoot my sound issue...I have reinstalled my ALSA drivers, and I have even upgraded them to ALSA 1.0.18a. I am still having the same issues...sound...
Nullack -- I have to say...THANK YOU!!! I am now watching a movie with my daughters (Alvin and the Chipmunks)...via Ushare. I have been wanting to do this for a while...thanks.

I second Brynster...I have the Thermaltake Bigwater 760i (http://www.thermaltakeusa.com/Product.aspx?C=1160&ID=1616) cooling my Intel Q6600, and it runs great! When I was building this box, I...
Correct, I have .mp3, boot sounds, older .avi files, etc through my headphones, and my .mkv (high def video files) are through my speakers. I have checked and rechecked all of my settings in the...
no, I try not to use Mplayer for anything...I like VLC for my video files, and Amarok for audio...but I will try to reinstall ALSA if you think that will help.
Ok, well, I have been through the guide, all to no avail...I could possibly be missing something though. I did end up installing "pauvcontrol" just to make sure I had no streams, and just as I...
Yes, I am using ALSA...rather, I am assuming I am using ALSA, as most of my settings under sound are set to "auto detect". I have changed these settings to pulse, alsa, oss, etc, and it has fixed...
