    OK, so if I exclude /media/* ,and when restoring just recreate a folder named 'cdrom0' and 'hdb1', everything should work like before ? I thought these folders were dynamic links to other files ?

    Yes, but, the cdrom and external hd are automatically mounted when I boot up the pc, and only contain data which isn't necessary to run the system. I'm worried that, if I exclude the /media folder,...

    This tutorial says it is unwise to backup the other mounted drives as well.
    By default, I have a cdrom and another hard drive mounted in the folder 'media'.

    I'm unable to boot up the kernel anymore, but I still have a tar backup made by this guide.
    Now, when I try to extract the content of this tarball with the live-cd, it refuses to write to the disk...
