I haven't messed with it at this point because I don't know which would be better, either. I'll probably try it at DDR333 later this week, as I have other pressing stuff keeping me off these boxes...
Yes, they won't work at all with many chipsets/CPUs. However, this batch was apparently made specifically for these chipsets and as a result they work perfectly (according to hours of memtest so...
It is: Act One in this slapstick upgrade comedy -- days before the RAM arrived -- was a failure to boot followed by a doomsday stench that quickly pervaded the entire house for a full day thanks to...
I'll look at that.
Yeah, except in the case of singly using one of these double-rank modules or combined with a single-rank module, as I have when I use the old 512M module. Together, they work as DDR400 (see Speccy,...
I think you may be onto something here, but I'm not sure.
I've looked at that table until I have a headache, but I'm not sure I understand it yet.
What is "single rank" and "double...
FWIW, here's the MB, with downloadable manual: https://tinyurl.com/n4caqml
In researching this, I came across a specific mention of that problem, but don't remember the details as it was a very different problem from the one I have.
The BIOS flash specifically enabled...
I have a couple of older boxes I'm upgrading for use with Lubuntu. They are actually quite capable for general use, but are badly slowed by a lack of RAM, only 512M. I got some OEM Kensington...
Never mind...I figured it out. ;)
Seems like it should be easy. Somehow, I can't figure out how, though!
Thanks for any help!
OK, so here's the latest:
I chucked the old SiS PCI vid card and plugged into the board's native video -- which is supported on Lubuntu. Works OK.
I found a fsck fix for that file system...
Well, incredibly, it looks like there were two problems:
1: There was a blown video card (popped capacitors were a dead giveaway) that was accounting for the absence of screen activity. I drug...
Yes, this really is a hardware problem!
I have an older machine I have been using for a Lubuntu platform. It's always been rock-solid. This past week or two, I've been doing a clean-out and...
I'm sure there must be a way, but in standard config, it just shows up as command line.
I need to be able to configure video devices in ZoneMinder, can't do it in terminal.
Thanks for any help!
Never mind, I figured it out!
So, I'm setting up an alarm system in my home and its dial-out function will probably be using a phone SIM card. I'm trying to make this as inexpensive as I can.
The two choices I've had...
That's helpful. Thanks!
It's very strange how various Linux live distributions have always made my laptops seem to run much hotter than with Windows OSs. I've never understood it. :-k
This is...
Ubuntu seems to make my laptop run extremely hot. Is there an installed app that can check to see what the system temperatures are and if everything is within limits?
Thanks for any help on this!
OK, here's the latest as of this evening:
With somewhat less drama and adventure than I usually encounter, I actually managed to bust open the laptop, pull the HD, plug in a USB external hard...
I'm all for simplicity.
This was my original plan, but I thought there'd be an easier way than pulling the drive, which is not that readily accessed in this particular laptop...but I think I can...
Wow.
My biggest problem is only understanding about 15% of what the guy's saying, so a lot of the explanation is blowing past me.
What I don't get (because I can't understand him) is the manual...
OK, I'll give it a try.
Thanks!
Doesn't it just ask you where you want the installation put from a list of the available drives during the first part of the install, or does it try to force a dual-boot if there's something already...
