What I like to do is run command & , but then run "disown". Otherwise, when you close the terminal, the program you had put in the background with & (and have forgotten :D) will be closed

nm-applet - run that in a terminal. Does that work? If so, go to System->Preferences->Sessions and add an entry for it.
Maybe the files are being corrupted in the download? CRC is a way of verifying a file is the same inbetween the server and the client(you) after download.

Ah, that needs a driver that isn't installed by default. Just run the LiveCD in safe graphics, install Ubuntu, then forst time you boot it it'll prompt you to install a "restricted driver" for that...
