    [ubuntu] Re: Forum-Files with wget

No. That just downloads the HTML page.
Wget will only work like that if you give it a path to an actual file.
The forum software won't do that, the only way to download those attachments is to sign...
  2. [ubuntu] Re: Opening programs in terminal without losing use of terminal

What I like to do is run command & , but then run "disown". Otherwise, when you close the terminal, the program you had put in the background with & (and have forgotten :D) will be closed

[ubuntu] Re: WIfi SElector applet is gone

    It's called
nm-applet - run that in a terminal. Does that work? If so, go to System->Preferences->Sessions and add an entry for it.
  6. [ubuntu] Re: I knoow it's been asked 1,000 times but help me extract.rar files!

Maybe the files are being corrupted in the download? CRC is a way of verifying a file is the same inbetween the server and the client(you) after download.
  7. [SOLVED] Re: update-manager -d (does not work on second use)

[ubuntu] Re: error message on login

I don't think that will work, you're calling whoami with root privileges..

    $ sudo whoami
    root

And you definitely don't want your $HOME owned by root :)

  12. [ubuntu] Re: I burned windows vista 64bit iso to a cd but need help

Why are you asking here? It's an Ubuntu forum, not a Windows forum. You have to reboot the pc, then make it boot from the CD- usually press one of the function keys as soon as the power comes on,...

Use & to run a program in the background, for example, try

    nautilus &
    - the window will appear, but the terminal will return to the propmt, so you can keep using it

[ubuntu] Re: Ubuntu 8.10 and modelsim mentorgraphics

Did you pay for a license? I assume this is the Linux version of Modelsim SE? I use Modelsim PE Windows version using Wine, and it links up with the Linux version of Xilinx just fine.

[ubuntu] Re: open a program from terminal

That probably did work, but the thing is, the terminal will close as soon as that program ends, which may have been quite quickly? Also try
