Found the problem. the uuid for swap was wrong in fstab,

Here is the part of dmesg that seems to identify the an 80 second time gap but I don't know what it means or how to solve. Please help if you can.

Thanks ajgreeny. I had evince, I changed to evince-gtk it made no difference to my problem.
When I try to start Evince from deskyop icon it appears briefly then disappears.
If I start from a command line I get "~$ evince

After many hours of struggle I solved this by deleting .gstreamer-0.10 from my home directory and then copying in .gstreamer from my 13.10 installation.
