What exactly happens when you try to resize the partition during the Ubuntu installation?

Why not do the resizing while installing Ubuntu rather than resizing and then installing.
When preparing the disk Ubuntu gives you the option to resize your Windows partition.

Did you open the ports in your firewall?

The OP wants to try the cd without installing it. The alternate cd doesn't do that as far as I know.

Your error message is saying that the application you are trying to install is not 32 bit.

Why do you not install vlc from the repos
