yes it's completely possible, just like you do in windows. in your home directory find .wine directory (select show hidden files first) the rest is the same as in windows.
can't you do it by vlc too? what is the difference?
by the way, don't forget this is the first version of the game and it can contain small bugs which lead to random crashes, CM/FM series had always bugs in the first versions to be corrected by later...

I can definitely confirm this is compiz related, no such problem occurs when I start FM fullscreen in case desktop effects are disabled.
