Re: GIMP 2.8 in Ubuntu 12.04: yes or no?

Really? I compiled GIMP 2.8 on Lucid, which needed me to fetch all the new depenencies too. Getting the dependencies was a little annoying but it wasn't that bad.

Re: GIMP 2.8 in Ubuntu 12.04: yes or no?

As mentioned and as is my own opinion, PPA's should only be used when absolutely necessary, and with caution.

If you want the latest version in a hurry another option is to get the source tarball...

Re: Let's increase our market share NOW

No, these guys don't have special needs. They are normal folk who use their computers for a living and/or in some cases for their hobbies.

The only people I can wholly recommend Linux as a...

Re: Let's increase our market share NOW

This is exactly it. The masses that matter won't come to desktop Linux because there's no fully-featured specialist software packages on Linux to do their jobs with. Then nobody wants to make these...

Re: Adobe flash no longer supporting Linux?

Meh. Flash is obsolete, with HTML5 supposed to be taking over. Assuming that Google doesn't try to do some shady do-hickery.

    Re: I did it!

I tried Kubuntu 12.04 on my Pentium 4 machine and it actually felt pretty lean. I didn't notice any resource-consuming overkill even on default settings. It wasn't quite the same performance as Xfce...

Poll: Re: 13.04 should be dedicated to performance.

Gamers aren't the only ones that appreciate performance.

For example, I use several applications that run much much better when the performance is there: Blender, GIMP, Jack/Ardour and various...

    [ubuntu] Re: Change boot/xsplash screen?

Okay. For anyone wanting away with the background image, I tricked my way around it: Go to the folder where the image is stored (if I recall it was in /lib/plymouth/themes/) and change permissions of...

Re: What is the most stable DE for 12.04

I'm going to be the oddball and suggest Openbox. It's so stable that it's bare. In my experience it simply cannot go wrong. There is literally nothing there to go wrong with. Edit its configuration...

    [ubuntu] Re: Change boot/xsplash screen?

Nope, it's just for the gui. It needs lots of Java stuff and the dependencies get bloated with the libraries. apt-get install super-boot-manager yields a hefty:

    The following NEW packages will...

[ubuntu] Re: How can I run .exe?

It's a driving tutor program. It's mostly likely not doing any low-level computing. It's probably just interfaces and some basic scripts. Doesn't hurt to try to run it with Wine anyway.

    Re: I did it!

I jumped ship to XFCE due to unity. It's like a Gnome 2 that went on a diet. Feels very much like traditional Gnome 2 in usage. I also had less configuring to do post-installation that most other...

Poll: Re: 13.04 should be dedicated to performance.

I'm for the notion. I've been on 10.04 LTS and just recently switched to 12.04 LTS only to be presented with a clunky interface that's slow and feels bloaty. I've hopped over to Xubuntu.

    It's not...

    [ubuntu] Re: Change boot/xsplash screen?

Interesting. I added the PPA, but it's a 100+ Mb download for a gui front-end? Isn't there a simpler way to do it, like editing a text file?

do a sudo apt-get install wine or download Wine from the software center and then run the exe file using that.

    [ubuntu] Re: Change boot/xsplash screen?

I'd like to know too. The Xubuntu boot screen is dreary and I'd like to change it to something else. Even just black with the Xubuntu logo would be better.
