OK, so progress. Seems the NVIDIA driver doesn't get the EDID info.
    From /var/log/Xorg.0.log:
[ 6.757] (WW) NVIDIA(GPU-0): The EDID read for display device CRT-0 is invalid:
    [ 6.757] (WW)...
  10. [SOLVED] Re: Monitor EDID not recognised - native resolution not allowed

    Yet more information!

Strangely I had to hack my way into Ubuntu via "nomodeset" - I suspect this is to do with an nVidia driver problem, and since then I've installed the nVidia driver.

    sudo...

  14. [SOLVED] Re: Launching Terminal in Ubuntu 11.10 freezes system

That's a shame, it's something I was trying to avoid.

One thing I forgot to mention is that when I switch to Metacity, everything seems to work fine - wouldn't that suggest just Compiz is at...

Firstly, hello to all! First post, so seems appropriate.

Secondly, I'm a relative novice to the Ubuntu world, but a bit of a dabbling geek - I suspect it's the dabbling that has put me in this...
