i whould use Sudo apt-get check to see if some packages are broken.
and if so fix them and try again.
If you want to game and use linux i whould tell you to install windows and virtualize ubuntu.
The other way around is possible but virtual windows whould be way to slow to play games(i think)

Using 13.04 for about 3 days or something now with gnome3 with the gnome-shell not the unity thing and it is working awesome loving it !
You should remove both the ubuntuś from your system and use a ubuntu disc/usb and install alongside to windows 8 and youll be done with it

Try to boot the computer and put it to standby then open the lid and try to hit the cntrl+alt f6 button to enter a terminal there.
See if that works and if it does try to kill the xorg process...
I'd have to agree go get 12.04 and don't dist-upgrade because itl wreck your system
Make the remote desktop/vnc work on the windows box, fire it up connect with it through ubuntu and there you have it.
