I have just installed HPLIP-3.13.2 about 20 minutes ago, I did it from the HPLIP website,
then went into synaptic and enabled it, works sweet and smooth as anything.
I use Ubuntu 12.04.2

Just been to HPLIP and see that there are Three versions of your printer, so there maybe, a conflict, within 12.04 I don't know.
I do know that the file you need is:- hplip-3.12.9.run....

I use the HP Photosmart 6510, and have run it both in 10.04 and at this time 12.04, using (hplip-3.12.6.run) available from HPLIP Website, just follow the instructions.
