  1. [gnome] Re: GNOME Files Compress Formats - Any way to add tar.gz

    Thanks... that must be it.
  2. [gnome] Re: GNOME Files Compress Formats - Any way to add tar.gz

    Thanks.

Yes... I have p7zip and p7zip-full installed. I also have gzip installed. File Roller has the formats and options and encrypts fine.

    I think it's just a new "feature"...
  3. [gnome] Re: GNOME Files Compress Formats - Any way to add tar.gz

I'm saying the 2nd... by that I mean... context (right) mouse click on item brings up a menu, and you select compress... That brings up a dialog with 3 options. I read somewhere that there was a...
  4. [gnome] GNOME Files Compress Formats - Any way to add tar.gz

In 18.04, GNOME Files (aka Nautilus) no longer opens File Roller for compression. Instead I get a dialog with tar.xz, zip. and 7z archive formats. Is there a way to change some install or...
  5. [ubuntu] Re: ext3 partition recognized incorrectly as silicon_medley_raid_member

For what it's worth -- I gave up on solving my problem regarding the silicon_medley_raid_member, and just reinstalled my OS. For me I always keep the OS and home partitions separate so it was easy. ...
  6. [ubuntu] Re: trouble rcovering files from broken ubuntu install

Other thing I intended to say. How ubuntu partitions are layed out depends on how you did the install. I'm not sure what the default layout is -- maybe someone else knows. Typically you need a...
  7. [ubuntu] Re: trouble rcovering files from broken ubuntu install

Reason I mentioned puppy linux was that on my wife's computer I had trouble with the Ubuntu Live CD and also a particular ext3 partition. Puppy would for some reason mount the ext3 partition but...
  8. [ubuntu] Re: trouble rcovering files from broken ubuntu install

It might be worth checking the following command:

    cat /proc/partitions

This will list all of your partitions that are available. I've gotton the fsck result you did when I've selected the...
  9. [ubuntu] Re: trouble rcovering files from broken ubuntu install

My experience has been -- live CD does not mount partitions unless you open them from the places menu.

So if I understand correctly -- from live CD, open up a command window. Then run the...

[ubuntu] Re: problem with permissions and users

You know I had that problem -- i.e. could not mount usb drive from the boot CD. I don't know why. I ended up backing up over the network to another machine. Other option -- if you can see the...
  11. [ubuntu] Re: trouble rcovering files from broken ubuntu install

If its mounted then umount it before scanning. I.E. "umount /dev/sda1". I'm assuming your not booted from it of course. You can check if it's mounted with the "mount" command with no arguments.

  12. [ubuntu] Re: Window too large for desktop; can't see buttons (Touch Screen)

This is a good question. My experience is that you really need a 1024x768 minimium size to work with ubutnu well. So I don't know of a solution to this -- but I'm interested in what others say.

[ubuntu] Re: problem with permissions and users

I'm assuming that you mean that you changed the permissions on every single file, directory, device, symbolic link etc on your system? Is that what you mean? If so why?

If this is in fact what...
  14. [ubuntu] Re: Can someone know whats a hard drive controller

    My vote is:

  15. [ubuntu] Re: trouble rcovering files from broken ubuntu install

Some ideas. First see if your ubuntu partition is still there. You can do that in fdisk or using cat on /proc/partitions.

If your partition is still there than you can do a couple of things. ...
  16. [ubuntu] Re: ext3 partition recognized incorrectly as silicon_medley_raid_member

An update. It seems that it has something to do with the partition itself. I copied /dev/sda2 to /dev/sda1 using dd -- and the problem went with the copy.

The strange thing about this is that...
  17. [ubuntu] ext3 partition recognized incorrectly as silicon_medley_raid_member

I have a very strange issue. I have a desktop Ubuntu 10.04 system that has worked just fine for months. Now suddenly grub won't find the root partition which is an ext3 partition (/dev/sda2).

[mythbuntu] Re: Screen stays blank after turning off an on

I have similar problem. HDMI connection to a VIZO HD TV. I'm using the fglrx radio drivers. Not sure which chipset -- but one of the later video chipsets for HD support.

    Restarting the X...
  19. [ubuntu] Inverter Cable for System 76 Laptop - MS-1012

Can you tell me where I can get a new inverter cable for my MS-1012. This is a laptop that you sold about 3 years ago. Do you still have parts? It was one of the 12-13" wide models you were...

Re: 64 Bit Ubuntu / VMWare Server 2 Beta 1

I've not done this. My only comment is that the workstation may need to have VT enabled hardware. Also you may need to turn VT on in the BIOS. Most higher end new hardware -- this is probably not...
  21. Re: Troubles trying to run Ubuntu inside Vmware Server

Sorry I meant "virtual disks" not "visual disks" above.

  22. Re: Troubles trying to run Ubuntu inside Vmware Server

I think the suggestion was to use real hard drive particians rather than visual disks (which are mapped to files).

I don't know myself how much better this is -- but one would think performance...
  23. Re: Using a raw partition as disk image with KVM/QEMU?

One would think so, but I've not tried this.

  24. Re: Troubles trying to run Ubuntu inside Vmware Server

You should be able to install it directly from the ISO. VMWare can connect to an iso image file. I can't remember if I installed my image using VMWare Server or VMWare Workstation -- but I do run...
  25. Re: I am terrible at burning DVDs/CDs... I always ruin them..

SATA -- interesting -- maybe there are more bugs or unresolved issues with it since it's newer. I think my laptop burner is IDE and it works fine under linux.

Do you have SATA hard drives? I...
