Well I got it working. Seems have corrupted the download while on a public WiFi while out. When I got home it downloaded the deb and installed just fine!

I am trying to install Steam on my Xubuntu 12.04
When doubleclicking the icon I get:
Deb I get "Could not open 'steam_latest.deb': The package might be corrupt or you are not allowed to open...
From a fresh boot I enter the following command:
jim@Tux:~$ startx
Then the screen flashes black and then I am presented with the error message.
I am not able to start x from CLI
I get an error that says:
waiting for Xserver to shut down Server terminaged successfully (0). Closing log file.
I boot directly into CLI, when Running startx, I get this.
jim@tux:~$ startx
xauth: timeout in locking authority file /home/jim/.Xauthority

Have you tried to install the Ubuntu Restricted Extras?
I on the other hand am not able to play videos with that installed, but once I uninstall it, my videos work fine... pretty odd...

During some troubleshooting of playing videos with VLC, I have discovered that my videos play fine WITHOUT Xubuntu Restricted...

Using a small hard drive (180 GB) dual booting windows XP for gaming and Ubuntu 9.10 for my other stuff during install I didnt know how much of each partition i would use, so i did 50-50 1 for ext3 ...
