I did it via Muon update manager, which runs dist-upgrade internally.
Are you referring to my old install? No, I didn't use any third party source for that. So I believe it was the default driver itself, yes, so my bad.
I am just curious how it magically works now!!...

Seems like a malformed path. Try reinstalling kdm instead first:
sudo apt-get install --reinstall kdm
Yes, you can install some apps in LiveCD, but they will all be gone once you reboot/shot down and you have to install it again when you launch the LiveCD.
For the firefox problem, see this:

What power manager do you have? Try kpowersave and see if you get the error.
use kdesudo or simply sudo as user:
$ kdesudo kate
Switch to X11 output mode. VLC -> Tools -> Preferences -> Video and choose "X11 output module" from the Output drop menu.
KDM is not affected by the restricted driver. So you can select it from the KDM sessions context menu instead.
If it anyhow happens, you can log into virtual terminal tty1 (Ctrl + Alt + F1) and...
Google wicd.

sudo apt-get install -f && sudo dpkg-configure -a
Try:
sudo apt-get purge usplash && sudo apt-get install usplash usplash-theme-ubuntu

Press Alt+F2 and type in xterm.
In that case, I would then suggest a clean install. At the LiveCD menu, choose "Try ubuntu without making changes..." option and copy all content of your /home to a safe place.
