As for the graphic card:
If I were you I would not choose any hardware having ATI in it.... maybe only had bad luck with ATI. Anyway I have never had any problem with nVidia GeForce graphic...
I still prefer GNOME to KDE. KDE is way too much eye-candy I think.

Everything works and loads faster. Firefox 3.5 works like a charm too, with finally fully functional 64bit flash. Compiz bug got fixed so I can use the newest nVidia driver, etc. etc....
