stick a nertwork cable in then install restricted drivers
your lost is still recoverable like I said do a google search for a windows recovery software
try gparted
desktop freezing in my experience has always being down too video drivers
you should have run ubuntu from cd and used an external device to write data too do a google search for a free data recovery software you might get the lost data back
go to bios makers web site (not the motherboard makers) and it will tell you what the beeps mean its usually bad ram video or or a fault on the motherboard
boot from your windows xp cd when you see the prompt hit R to enter repair console
select your windows partition usually 1 hit enter twice for the admin password unless you use a
admin password...

do you have support for legacy usb in your bios ?
the simplest way for you would be to backup your data and boot from your windows xp cd
and delete what ever is there then create a new partition for windows xp leave what is left
for ubuntu after...
graphics drivers would be my 1st thoughts second ram chip gone bad
nope I had a hp dvXXXX wot ever model it was and would not charge battery so i replaced the mobo and all was well i think u need to install windows and eliminate its not ubuntu problem

safest thing would be to use another hdd
you could clone the hdd to another hdd then clone it back it will probablys have a recovery patition leave it as it is you will also be able to create recovery cds once you have booted into windows

if its a login password just login as administrator in safe mode and go to control panel then user accounts remove the password
if this dont work you could try using the password software in...
