    [ubuntu] Kernel management questions

    Both 2.6.31-14 and 2.6.31-15 of the Ubuntu 9.10 kernels have been disasters for me. I have Ethernet and clocksource problems in these which lead to a lot of instability. I'm currently running 9.10...

    [ubuntu] Re: 9.10 + old kernel + sound

    Well, I added the software sources for Jaunty back, and reinstalled the ALSA drivers via the "module-assistant" utility. I was able to build and install these successfully, but alas after rebooting...

    [ubuntu] Re: 9.10 + old kernel + sound

    I'd really like to know this too. The new kernel has a conflict with my Ethernet controller.

    [ubuntu] Re: builtin_dd missing?

    For me the problem was a corrupt DVD structure, this problem is not reproduced with other DVDs.

    [ubuntu] Re: builtin_dd missing?

    It actually looks like my genisoimage is completely messed up:

    and in /var/log/messages:

    These problems may be unrelated, but some sort of upgrade caused these issues... Any...

    [ubuntu] builtin_dd missing?

    Hello,

    Since some upgrade (possibly to Ubuntu 8.10) I can no longer use genisoimage/growisofs since builtin_dd is now missing:

    Why is this, and how do I get builtin_dd back, or do I?
  7. [all variants] Re: Basic question about TUN/TAP/Bridged networking

    Thanks for your input!
  8. [all variants] Re: Basic question about TUN/TAP/Bridged networking

    Yup, although the same technique I used for setting up my networking also works in Xen as well...

    Maybe it's just a matter of the software improving so that bridged networking is less complicated...
  9. [all variants] Re: Basic question about TUN/TAP/Bridged networking

    So why is it that some guides for setting up bridged networking involve setting up this device node, whether others (and the one I used) simply require some ifconfig commands to bring up the br0...
  10. [all variants] Re: Basic question about TUN/TAP/Bridged networking

    So how is it that I have networking without an explicit TAP interface on the host machine? If these are for the guest, where exactly are these interfaces maintained?
  11. [all variants] Re: Basic question about TUN/TAP/Bridged networking

    Interesting... I don't know where that came from, but maybe I'm basically already doing TAP using different terminology, like you said?
  12. [all variants] Basic question about TUN/TAP/Bridged networking

    Hello,

    My bridged network is working. I have a vnet0 and br0 interface, and everything seems to be fine. Would there be any point, any particular advantage for me to setup a TUN/TAP interface? Why...
  13. [ubuntu] Re: I can't install winXP on libvirt + kvm: No APIC

    Sorry, the above should read "<acpi/>" not "<apic/>"
  14. [ubuntu] Re: I can't install winXP on libvirt + kvm: No APIC

    I figured it out. After modifying your domain XML to add:

    <features>
    <apic/>
    </features>

    You need to define your domain:

    virsh -c qemu:///system define /etc/libvirt/qemu/yourdomain.xml

    [all variants] Re: KVM very slow with virtual cd-rom

    I'm not sure if I'm getting those same log messages though, they aren't appearing in my libvirt, kern.log, or messages logs... However, performance is indeed painfully, painfully slow.

    [all variants] Re: KVM very slow with virtual cd-rom

    FWIW, I'm having this very same problem... It it indeed related to using a virtual CD-ROM (i.e. disk image)? Does this happen with a physical CD (i.e. pointing to /dev/scd0)?
  17. [ubuntu] Re: I can't install winXP on libvirt + kvm: No APIC

    My capabilities says that apic should have been enabled by default anyway...

    Has anybody gotten libvirt/WindowsXP 64 bit working in AMD 64?
  18. [ubuntu] Re: I can't install winXP on libvirt + kvm: No APIC

    I'm having this same problem, even with APIC enabled in my domain's XML:

    <features>
    <pae/>
    <acpi/>
    <apic/>
    </features>
