    As noted in the original post I've tried chown but it doesn't work because it sees the filesystem as read-only. This drive has never been connected to a windows system.

    That is what you are looking at in my previous post. I just had xorg autoconfigure to get my mouse working again. It was this way originally and I changed,

    to
