  1. [ubuntu] Update Manager not running daily since upgrade to Intrepid

If I run it manually it works perfectly. However, before the upgrade (Note: previously upgraded from Feisty to Gutsy to Hardy without a problem), every morning it checked for updates and silently...
  2. [ubuntu] Re: [SOLVED] Intrepid install Failed. Need to get to single user root mode

    Try this recommendation from bodhi.zazen:

"You will need to manually edit /etc/shadow and possibly /etc/passwd

    /etc/passwd

    root:x:0:0:root:/root:/bin/bash

    /etc/shadow
  3. [ubuntu] Re: Intrepid install Failed. Need to get to single user root mode

    bodhi,

Editing /etc/shadow and making the password equal "!" rather than simply inserting a "!" in front of the password, which is what usermod does, worked perfectly. /etc/passwd did not require...
  4. [ubuntu] Re: [SOLVED] Intrepid install Failed. Need to get to single user root mode

I tried going to single user recovery mode, and it's still asking for root's password. So as far as I can tell 'sudo usermod --lock root' may do exactly the same thing as 'sudo passwd --lock root',...
  5. [ubuntu] Re: Intrepid install Failed. Need to get to single user root mode

I intentionally added the password --md5 $1$BIWmD$dA8Bbs4WZ7... line to /boot/grub/menu.lst to require a password to select one of the recovery mode boot choices. But I didn't know about usermod....
  6. [ubuntu] Re: Intrepid install Failed. Need to get to single user root mode

I had to set the root password to install a modem/fax driver, and wanted to unset it to get back to Ubuntu's standard security model. My understanding was that the way to do this was to run:

  7. [ubuntu] Re: Upgrade took me out as root user

    Here's another possibility.

    1. Take a look at /etc/sudoers and confirm that it has a line:

    %admin ALL=(ALL) ALL
This gives members of the admin group the right to run any command.

    2....

I don't know if anyone is going to read this, since there were no replies to my question. But since I solved it, I wanted to post my solution for other people. Moreover, if requiring a password to...

  10. [ubuntu] [SOLVED] Intrepid install Failed. Need to get to single user root mode

I have set up Grub to require a password to select recovery alternative modes. However, in the past when I selected a "Recovery Mode" version of a kernel, it went directly to a command prompt logged...

  12. [ubuntu] Why am I finding it so hard to set up DNS?

I have looked over the documentation, and BIND looks well documented, and straight forward. Yet, simple things don't see to work. There are two things that I cannotget to work reliably:

    Get...

[ubuntu] Re: Regenerating snakeoil SSL certificate

I have been digging into this more -- going through the security notices.

and learned that you can test for...

Have you tried booting Gutsy in recovery mode?

If that works, perhaps you could restart the upgrade to Hardy.

    [ubuntu] Regenerating snakeoil SSL certificate

Either concurent with, or shortly after, upgrading to Hardy, the security system indicated that my ssh keys were generated by a version ssh-keygen that had a broken random number generator and that I...
  18. [ubuntu] Re: Hardy Heron - Need to restart NIS and autofs

It also looks like the autofs (automount) problems are being seen by others:

  19. [ubuntu] Re: Hardy Heron - Need to restart NIS and autofs

I noticed that I am not the only person to have a problem with NIS http://www.experts-exchange.com/OS/Linux/Setup/Q_23362347.html

One other NIS issue from /var/log/syslog is a bunch of errors of...
  20. [ubuntu] Hardy Heron - Need to restart NIS and autofs
