I noticed the same thing when i was using Ubuntu.Chrome was upgrading alot and in huge amounts, so to speak :D
Never had a problem, so I think you got nothing to worry about.
1 GB of RAM is not that much now a days. Gnome alone takes 2-3oo MB while idle. Google Chrome wastes about 9o-1oo megs too , so the more application you open the harder it is on your system :)

install the proprietary driver from ATI , then from System > Administration > Hardware Driver pick the one you'd like to use [either open source driver or the proprietary one].
