  1. Re: NEED HELP: How to configure apt and synaptic under proxy

    And it's still a problem in Natty 11.04! :o

Just been playing with 11.04 from a USB stick, pleasantly surprised that Unity isn't as bad as the one-window-at-a-time UNR, glad I've tried it. Even...

[SOLVED] Re: I need help with gtkpod!

Is GtkPod dead - no longer developed?
We've got the latest version, but that's a year old and doesn't work with a 2GB silver shuffle. It moans about the file being too small or something.

    Is a...
  3. [ubuntu] Re: Is there a wifi networks display that updates?

    Thanks

I've solved my 'problem' from the other direction, as such - I've tried all the easy places to park in my local town in the evening and I've gotten to know where there are free hotspots -...
  4. [ubuntu] Re: Is there a wifi networks display that updates?

Looks like swscanner might be more my cup of tea :)

  5. [ubuntu] Re: Is there a wifi networks display that updates?

Picky? Maybe - but IMHO being picky is a what drives human progress :)
If we have needs and wishes and work towards them, or find ways to inspire others to work towards solutions, it is to the...
  6. [ubuntu] Re: Is there a wifi networks display that updates?

well it kinda works, but still fills up with wifi that I've left behind streets away, doesn't seem to clear, can't be filtered to show only free/open networks or display in any other order than the...

  9. [ubuntu] Is there a wifi networks display that updates?

I would like to be able to drive around looking for free open wifi hotspots (my passenger of course, not me!) The current NetworkManager applet doesn't refresh, so you end up with a huge ever-growing...

[all variants] Re: Untraceable net use?

There's probably an easier way to get a new random MAC address but I felt the need to write a quick-n-dirty script for the challenge of it.

This seems to do the trick

    #!/bin/bash

  11. [ubuntu] Re: howto: get wireless working on samsung n130 - realtek 8192

    Thanks, I'm almost there now!

[all variants] Re: Untraceable net use?

    I know, I know... :P

But it's a technical question more than anything. I don't need to do anything dodgy online. I'm just interested in the theory & practicalities of how traceable we are, and...

[SOLVED] Re: Anti-Virus - is it necessary?

If something like that works, with a real payload, then it would become a problem and the AV progs would eventually look for it, but that wouldn't be much help for the initial victims.

[ubuntu] Re: only able to get 800x600 resolution

Try the lspci terminal command to see what brand of graphics it's got.
If it's Intel Graphics see :

  18. [ubuntu] Re: Can I install from a file - no CD or USB key?

Well... I've drawn a blank. I'm mystified. The "Plop" boot manager was waaaay too complicated and wanted to install something permanently, which isn't what I want. I just want to be able to boot up...
  19. [ubuntu] Re: Can I install from a file - no CD or USB key?

oooh... I've just noticed a strange sized opening on the side... it's got a floppy drive! And I've got floppies to hand... that might make it easier... perhaps? :)

    "plop" looks worth a try...
  20. [ubuntu] Re: Can I install from a file - no CD or USB key?

Indeed. Yet times are changing ... we had a Windows 7 machine die here the other day (motherboard), and bought a new PC, popped the old drive in, Win 7 detected all the changes and was up and running...
  21. [ubuntu] Re: Can I install from a file - no CD or USB key?

No joy yet with that one. If you can find such a thing for an ancient old Time (MiTAC) 7321 with "Insyde Software SCU" BIOS with its fullsome 37GB disk and all of 352MB memory, cranked along by a...
  22. [ubuntu] Re: Can I install from a file - no CD or USB key?

  23. [ubuntu] Re: Can I install from a file - no CD or USB key?

That's a darn good idea, I'll look into that - thanks.

As for the install, it seems like the Unetbootin "frugal install" and Wubi methods will get things going to some degree, but not the ultimate...
  24. [ubuntu] Re: Can I install from a file - no CD or USB key?

Ok thanks... I'll make a USB Key with a wubi jobbie that can be launched from Windows, and see if I can use that to do the dual-boot install. I'll let you know how it goes ... however I'm a bit tied...
  25. [ubuntu] Can I install from a file - no CD or USB key?

    Quick question (I hope) ... :)
I have played with the "Live" CD / USB before, and it's my prefered way to install.

However, I have an old lappie which won't boot from USB, and I have no blank...
