  1. [ubuntu] Re: Console dead, nvidia stac in dmesg. Hardware? or Software? 12.04 LTS 3.2.0-63-gen

It does not appear to be the KVM. There have been no farther incidents involving the windows box, and I replicated the problem with the main monitor, keyboard etc. directly connected to the Ubuntu...
  2. [ubuntu] Console dead, nvidia stac in dmesg. Hardware? or Software? 12.04 LTS 3.2.0-63-generic

This morning, my monitors went dead. I ssh'd to the box, found no sign of X running, and tried to reboot "sudo shutdown -r now". The reboot hung, and I resorted to the power switch. I forget the...

    Firefox Noise

I'm running Ubuntu 12.04 LTS with Unity. I believe I last installed patches approx. 2 weeks ago. This morning I did "sudo apt-get update" and "sudo apt-get upgrade" to pick up the fix for GnuLTS. All...
  4. Firefox - ads on the landing page - how to get rid of them?

I run firefox with adblock. I haven't set a home page.

When I launch a new window, I get a page with a large globe-like icon, a google search bar, and underneath it some message apparently from...
  5. Firefox, fluxbox, 12.10 --> loads of error messages. What's wrong?

I *had* a working installation of Ubuntu 12.10 desktop, with Unity. I installed 2 months of updates, and Unity self-destructed. I then installed kubuntu-desktop and fluxbox, to try them out.... and...

Where did my Unity environment go? [12.10]

I had a system running 12.10 Ubuntu, with Unity. It's a bit flaky, for which I'll blame the hardware vendor (lenovo). The flakiness usually manifests as display weirdness, showing up when I dock,...
  7. Wanted - Monitors properly configured before I login (12.10)

I've got a laptop that ideally would sometimes run standalone, but would normally run with 2 external monitors, both tilted 90 degrees. In that mode, I usually want it to ignore the laptop screen...
  8. [ubuntu] Lenovo multiple monitor issues - which pieces of software are relevant?

I am cursed with a lenovo laptop. It has a docking station with two external monitors attached to the dock. It's dual boot, windows 7 and Ubuntu 12.10 (previously 12.04)

It's been a PITA from the...
  9. [ubuntu] Ubuntu 12.10 (Unity) - window resize stopped working

Yesterday I decided to reboot my system and install the latest patches. (Alas, Ubuntu isn't stable enough that I can keep it up for months at a time.) I had last rebooted 21 days previously. I don't...
  10. [ubuntu] Re: Ubuntu 12.10, Unity: Where did the Amazon icon on my desktop come from

I took my problem to IRC.

You can get rid of some of the problem with

    "sudo apt-get remove unity-lens-shopping"

or the equivalent via the GUI

But basically it's part of the direction...
  11. [ubuntu] Re: Ubuntu 12.10, Unity: Where did the Amazon icon on my desktop come from

Bump! The icon and associated unwanted process keeps coming back. I have not found any documented way to turn it off permanently, perhaps because documenting "Unity" is not a priority. Do I need to...

[ubuntu] Re: Should I Update Ubuntu 12.04

Personally I'd stick with the LTS release (12.04) at least until another LTS release comes out, regardless of performance. IIRC, you have 2 years of support remaining, so why move to a release that's...
  13. [ubuntu] Ubuntu 12.10, Unity: Where did the Amazon icon on my desktop come from

I found an amazon icon on the bar at the left of the screen. It appeared not to be pinned, so *something* was presumably running.

    Investigation with ps gave me:

ps axlwww | grep -i amazon
    0 ...

[ubuntu] Re: Where are my coredumps?!?

    I found part of it.

Ubuntu has helpfully defaulted the RLIMIT_CORE to 0.

    To fix this, try:

    $ulimit -c unlimited

    [ubuntu] Where are my coredumps?!?

I'm running Ubuntu 12.10 desktop. I'm attempting to use it as a convenient platform for software development. My program crashed with a SEGV. It claimed "Segmentation fault (core dumped)". There was...
  16. [ubuntu] Re: Ubuntu 12.10 Unity - Firefox has no usable menus - how do I add a bookmark?

    This looks like http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=2128579

I found a way out of my specific problem. Most menus still aren't working, but I can now add a bookmark.

    First fiddle around...
  17. [ubuntu] Ubuntu 12.10 Unity - Firefox has no usable menus - how do I add a bookmark?

I'm running Ubuntu 12.10, with the Unity desktop manager. With a firefox window selected, the menus at the top of the screen don't appear when hovered over. I get the titles, e.g. "Help" or...
  18. [ubuntu] Re: quantal quetzel: local directory accesses stuck; ps reports WCHAN of rpc_wa STAT

That would be reasonable _if_ I were trying to access files or directories that were mounted over nfs. I'm used to that behaviour.

But I was trying to access local files, except for the df...
  19. [ubuntu] quantal quetzel: local directory accesses stuck; ps reports WCHAN of rpc_wa STAT D+

    Hi Folks,

This morning my system had apparantly done a spontaneous reboot. When I got it back up and logged in, I found that any attempt to list the files in a directory hung. This started with an...
  20. [ubuntu] Re: 12.10 - After kernel "upgrade", system has trouble staying in graphics mode

It gets even more insane. With vmlinuz-3.5.0-17-generic working and vmlinuz-3.5.0-23-generic not working, I wanted to boot from vmlinuz-3.5.0-17-generic by default, but without uninstaling the...
  21. [ubuntu] Re: Changing the default kernel and making it stay changed

    Well, it's not solved.

This somehow caused the previously good kernel to misbehave. I followed your instructions without changing anything else, and rebooted - and the graphics problem I'd seen...
  22. [ubuntu] Re: 12.10 - After kernel "upgrade", system has trouble staying in graphics mode

After 24 hours, the system is still behaving perfectly on vmlinuz-3.5.0-17-generic. Previous to that, I was lucky to get 3 hours of stability.

    It's pretty clear there's a bug somewhere - either...
  23. [ubuntu] Re: Changing the default kernel and making it stay changed

This looks great, thank you. I'll mark the thread [solved] once I've tried and verified it - or post what happened, if it's not what I wanted, which I'm not expecting.
  24. [ubuntu] Changing the default kernel and making it stay changed

I have a 12.10 system which has been through several weeks of updates from "software upgrader". This has taken the kernel from 3.5.0-17, which works, to 3.5.0-22 and 3.5.0-23, which seem to be making...
  25. [ubuntu] 12.10 - After kernel "upgrade", system has trouble staying in graphics mode

I have a Lenovo T430 laptop with a docking station and 2 external monitors.

I ran Ubuntu 12.04.01 on it with no graphics issues, except that I could not extend my desk top across the laptop...
