    If you do login automatically, run gdmsetup and reset the default session.

    Do you login automatically or do you have to enter a password? If it's the latter, just change the session type from the combo box at the bottom of the screen.

    Do you mean Xubuntu 8.10? I believe apt-add-repository was added a little more recently (9.10 maybe?). In may be that you are not running a recent enough version of *buntu to have this functionality.
