I too am having this problem with the same device. On the 3 network. Oddly enough, the connection lasts a lot longer on one user account on the same laptop than my own.

Right click on the chromium entry in the bar and click minimize or maximize. You can do that with any running application.

My girlfriends laptop (Acer Aspire 5536) has an internal memory card slot, however Ubuntu doesn't seem to be recognising it.
