The fix for me was:

install dosfstools

on the machine used to create the flash drive, format with gparted the flash drive to fat32 and use unetbootin to re-install the image on the flash drive....

The drivers show as installed in Hardware Drivers (Additional Drivers in 10.10), I don't know where else to look about that. When re-installing everything is normal, I don't receive any errors.
