if you mess or use ethe wrong update you ruin the PC - period
been there, done that, some machines do not support Ubuntu power management
burn another disc
why don't you update and just make the desktop environment one you prefer ?
12.04 will fit on a CD
12.10 requires a DVD
have you tried installing the linux drivers ?
I used Synaptic Package manager to remove it
nonsense, I am running 12.04 on an ancient machine with 2 gigs memory and it runs great, system monitor says I have memory to spare
have you tried going into the BIOS and disabling the Windows 8 Secure Boot option before booting to the disc ? Most Windows 8 machines come with it enabled by default.
did you disable the Windows 8 Secure Boot in BIOS before you ran the disc ?
I am a total nubie, I got that kernel error thing too on an older machine, I tried a different version of 12.04 and it worked perfectly, I agree with the above, go with 12.04
OK, never mind, found it !!! cool now I can see- thanks !!!
I just tried edit/preferences/content in Firefox, upped the font size, but nothing changed, did I miss a step saving the option or.... ?
also not sure I understand option 2, the zoom, can you advise...
I am running 12.04 and sorta a newbie. My eyesight is not what it used to be, so is there anyway to increase the size of my font my for easier reading in Firefox ?
thanks

I like how Amarok displays the lyrics to almost any song
I was running the LXDE desktop with ubuntu 12.04 on a dual boot with win7 on a later model Dell Inspiron. Everything works fine, so I tried the LXDE desktop- luved it, worked great for like a half...
you can install it to erase everything or install it alongside ubuntu, I did that, no problem
(but I like ubuntu better)
why use all those terminal commands ? I use the Update Manager ? Does it matter in any way ?
thanks
Also re EDENEEN advice....how do I find SYNAPTIC PACKAGE MANAGER?
you can download it from the Ubuntu Software Center
I am still a newbie, so I've always used synatic package manager to remove stuff
been there, done that.... I suggest you go with a dual boot set-up first. I run Ubuntu 99% of the time but their are still certain times you may need to use MS just to avoid headaches
Brasero did not work for me either, gave a data error message.
