    Why don't you try adding in the panel the System Monitor applet? You can enable various meters. I also installed the sensors-applet from package manager. It has an applet for cpu temp etc.

    Boot order comes from bios of motherboard, haven't seen it else.
    Compiz does slow a lot! Disable it at:

    System>Preferences>Appearance>Visual Effects set it to none.
