    What bios v are you running. Is it Insyde v 1.5.?
    In WIN with the AC adapter plugged on the temps are 10deg higher.
    There is no fan speed utility that allows control of the fan speeds for this...

    Very good!. Looks like your laptop is doing ok.
    The fact that the fan kicked in at 75C and then quickly brought down the temps to 55C or so is good. :-)

    To check your temps:
    you can use
    acpi -t as well.

    From a quick look at your dmesg.. I see your temps at the time

    Some answers to your q's:

    0) Your statements above are accurate. On booting the FAN state is OFF in Ubuntu but not so in Vista.

    Ok may I suggest a couple of things to start with.
    From a terminal window..Pl. post the output of
    > acpi -V

    and dmesg > dmesg_out.txt

    Perhaps I could compare your dmesg_out.txt with mine....

    I am going to save you some time here- I hope.
    The key point is that there are numerous Toshiba Laptops that have exhibited this problem of overheating.
    I struggled with this issue a few months...

    Compile was about 20 mins..
