[ubuntu] Re: Screen Won't Turn Off

Did anyone actually submit a bug report for this? In case not, I did here: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/unity/+bug/1377537

[ubuntu] Re: Screen Won't Turn Off

I did the upgrade from 14.04, that's why I'm interested to know if the screen lock works from a clean install.

The upgrade was fun in itself - the computer locked up completely half-way through (I...

[ubuntu] Re: Screen Won't Turn Off

Did a reinstall help? I have the same problem in 14.10. The screen doesn't turn off or lock after the designated time (CTRL-ALT-L doesn't make it lock, either)

However, Lock Screen from the system...
  4. [ubuntu] Re: VMware player breaks ctrl+a combo (gnome shell)

    Yup, that's what I did back in 2008. :)

fwiw, I found the source of my problem. xmodmap showed:

    shift Shift_L (0x32), Shift_R (0x3e)
    lock Caps_Lock (0x42)
    control ...
  5. [ubuntu] Re: VMware player breaks ctrl+a combo (gnome shell)

And then I remembered I have gnome-shell installed, so I can try it. In Ubuntu 12.10 with vmwareplayer 5, I lose CTRL-everything as well when vmwareplayer is running. I also lose the ability to type...
  6. [ubuntu] Re: VMware player breaks ctrl+a combo (gnome shell)

When using VMwarePlayer in Unity, I lose CTRL-everything. Do you lose just CTRL-a in gnome-shell?

Running setxkbmap fixes it for me temporarily, but only until the mouse cursor goes back over the...

[all variants] Re: Information about Nvidia optimus support

Does resizing the window help? I always get a black screen when I first run something on the nouveau card (and nouveau floods the syslog with PGRAPH errors), but resizing it smaller or bigger even...

[all variants] Re: Information about Nvidia optimus support

Yes, but I have no /sys/kernel/debug/vgaswitcheroo folder, which the internet tells me I need to use vgaswitcheroo. But my kernel (3.6-rc4) is built with CONFIG_VGA_SWITCHEROO=y.

    Sadly,...

[all variants] Re: Information about Nvidia optimus support

@Lekensteyn, thanks for the info. But how exactly does bumblebee not cooperate with prime? Doesn't it just wait in the background and wait for optirun to request a server? Or does it stop vga...

[all variants] Re: Information about Nvidia optimus support

Actually, I found that I don't need to remove bumblebee/nvidia: if I restart X after I modprobe nouveau, I get sane values for xrandr --listproviders, and prime works. It only works if I allow...

[all variants] Re: Information about Nvidia optimus support

I just installed xorg-edgers and the latest nouveau/intel from git. The default xrandr command doesn't support --listproviders, but running

    (ie the one I...

[all variants] Re: Information about Nvidia optimus support

I used the official master git code (I think) for nouveau and intel (ie I didn't need the prime branches):

    nouveau:

    git://anongit.freedesktop.org/nouveau/xf86-video-nouveau

[all variants] Re: Information about Nvidia optimus support

@pogopuschel: thanks for the guide, I got it working after a couple of hiccups. There was a typo in the build code (cd.. instead cd ..). I used xserver 1.12.99.905 instead of .903 and the latest...

Re: Just noticed Kernel 3.3-rc1 is here

There's a manual fix for the nvidia issue at http://weltall.heliohost.org/wordpress/2012/01/20/linux-kernel-3-3-rc1-and-nvidia-drivers/.

I followed the second option and ran:

Re: How do I use this Motion Gui

In case you were still wondering... it's a qt project, so you can load and build it with qtcreator (sudo apt-get install qtcreator). I needed to install libqtwebkit-dev as well to get it to build...

    Re: Xserver 1.11.2 is released

Robert Hooker added a patched unity to xorg-edgers, so now unity doesn't crash if you're using the PPA.

Everything works fine on my intel system except for google-earth, which can't see glx so it...
  18. Re: HOWTO: Run a particular program but prevent it from accessing the Internet

Great tutorial, thanks, a small improvement I have to suggest is to make the /usr/bin/ni script like so:

    #!/bin/bash
    CMD=$@
    sg no-internet "$CMD"

and then you don't need to add the quotes...

[ubuntu] Re: Dell XPS 15 (L501x)

The xorg log is in /var/log/Xorg.0.log. If you want to view it from a GUI app, try "Log File Viewer" (you might have to open the log file when you first run it).

Have you tried the x-swat updates?...

[ubuntu] Re: Dell XPS 15 (L501x)

Yep. Try installing ironhide or bumblebee.

I'd try bumblebee first if I were you because it doesn't turn off the nvidia card (so you are less likely to run into problems):

  21. [ubuntu] Re: Upgrade to 11.10 Failed: Resolve generated breaks....

I had the same error message and it turned out to be a problem upgrading to the new multiarch architecture in 11.10.

Re: wine could not initialize D3d, oneiric

[ubuntu] Re: Dell XPS 15 (L501x)

    Doh!

It might help if you uninstall bumblebee, reboot, and reinstall it, and perhaps reboot again. Sometimes I find that fixes up things that have gone wrong.

    You might see useful information...

[ubuntu] Re: Dell XPS 15 (L501x)

That's right, with an Optimus laptop you specifically shouldn't install the nvidia drivers (unless bumblebee does it for you) because if you do, nvidia's GL library replaces the intel GL library, and...
