No delay would be really nice, but I think it makes sense that some time is needed to buffer the stream? Even my apple products exhibit an approximately 4-5 second delay.

Also, I think I just confirmed that using VLC to stream to the AEX, there is no need to edit the /etc/pulse/default.pa file in order to prevent locking up the AEX after disconnecting.

Delay is about 8-10 seconds.

I was experiencing all the same issues (choppy sound, etc.), but finally got it to work perfectly with all players thanks to this thread:
