  1. Let's aim for Google Chrome start-up time for all apps

One of the things I like about Google Chrome on Linux is its start-up time. It takes about 1-2 seconds on IBM T23, PIII-era laptop.

Why is so fast compared to Rhythmbox, Gedit and other GTK apps?...

    Linux Hater stops hating

EDIT: topic already exists. Just ignore this.

    Yeah, it's official:

    http://linuxhaters.blogspot.com/2008/10/eof.html

Kinda sad, I think Linux needs more critique. However, the comments on the...

    Re: Proprietary Software - Philosophy

Reasons for not porting to Linux:

    * no platform as such exists, it is just a bunch of libraries put together

    * Linux users generally prefer free software, that is both gratis and libre. Adobe...
  5. Re: Computer software terms 'unfair' - Microsoft implicated

I don't know how the situation is in the EU but at least here in Denmark, EULA are not legal because it is required by law that you accept the EULA at purchase time (which you can't do).

    Also,...

    Re: Windows Superamacy

    Good rant, I completely agree.

I think that a lot of people steer away from working in IT because of the Microsoft empire - I know I did.

Microsoft ultimately brings incompetence and lousy...

    Re: Package Management Idea...

    Use case:

Install firefox1, firefox2, firefox3 on the same system using debs.

    Is not easily done.

Could easily be done with eg. Zeroinstall. Debs are not the answer for everything.
  8. Re: When Ubuntu can't even upgrade without hassles, how can we rate Ubuntu over Window

Sorry, that line wasn't meant for this thread but for those that blindly follows Ubuntu and calls everything else crap.

I'm not saying Windows is much better than Ubuntu. Let's raise our...
  9. Re: When Ubuntu can't even upgrade without hassles, how can we rate Ubuntu over Window

Nice to see a mature and thoughtful response.

Yes, I agree that it does help to be honest about the shortcomings of Ubuntu. That's why I don't "convert" anybody to Linux. They need to ask for it...

Re: That's what I'm talking about! Nixstaller.

This project doesn't mean a damn thing.

There are already projects for installers. We need binary compatibility but the distros won't do that. That's why users are having a hard time.

    Re: What happened?

If you have lots of problems with compiz, just turn it off.

I agree with you though, that they shouldn't have put it in. Only put in when it's ready.

Also, I think it is a bit naive to go...
  12. Re: When Ubuntu can't even upgrade without hassles, how can we rate Ubuntu over Window

No, that's not possible with arch.

With Arch you are upgrading the OS and apps all the time, just like debian testing or debian unstable.

I meant an OS (kernel, X, Gnome) stable, not touched...
  13. Re: When Ubuntu can't even upgrade without hassles, how can we rate Ubuntu over Window

I have a lot of breakage when upgrading from one release to another.

This is not only caused by using 3rd party repos, it is also caused by the lack of quality in Ubuntu. I came to this conclusion...

Re: Linux Needs a GOOD photo management app

Blue Marine could be a nice contender for a good photo management app:

It still needs some work but it seems better thought out than any of the other apps.

The latest Picasa for Windows runs fine in Linux. Does support RAW formats as well.

I am still waiting for a Lightroom clone to pop up in Linux land :-)

IP? Does that stand for Intellectual Property?

If so, then this is a term invented by Microsoft and does not exist.

Correct terms are: patent, copyright, trademark.

Poll: Re: Linux Desktop Readiness Thread

    Have you tried opensuse?

They have better X configuration tools than Ubuntu.

I also had to fight with xorg conf to get decent refresh rates on Ubuntu 7.04.
