Good advice. SSH is a good option, and the PUTTY client will work well with windows. More secure than ftp, as stated.

There is no easy answer to this, because you are trying to do something complicated.
1) Agree with the previous poster. FTP is the obvious choice. I use proftpd (in the repos...)
2) If you are...
On most home networks, you are behind a router, which likely uses NAT (network address translation). This makes it virtually meaningless to even have a firewall, since the network is not visible from...
Any update that includes a kernel change will likely break proprietary drivers like your nvidia. Try reinstalling it.
Quite possibly a video/graphics card issue. Will the live cd run OK? If so, you might consider using that to backup your data and do a fresh install....
Reboot and select the previous kernel from the grub menu. If it works, great. If not, post back.
Just a note about /var....
That is where temp lives, and it's not uncommon to fill a root partition by some unfortunate series of events, like ripping vids, a malfunctioning server writing endless...
The OP has discovered the joys of using testing/unstable vs. stable.
This is an excellent example of how the Debian development model could prevent about half of the posts to the fora here...
Swapiness?! With all the ram the OP has!?
Don't be troubled. 32 bit Linux can be made to support up to 64 gigs...
See?
In fact, for personal use, if you are behind a router, I wouldn't worry about the firewall at all. I have a network of 8-10 boxen behind nothing but a router. No worries.
In the interest of not making it sound like gedit can't do this...
Use the "File" menu in gedit. This will allow you to open a file, resize the windows, and open another file in another window.

By whom?
Poor form to call someone a troll when you offer nothing more than an ex cathedra statement for support.
Ubuntu isn't considered stable by anyone conversant with Debian development...
Good assessment, Anti. This matches my observations of hard drive installs as well. A pure Debian base seems noticeably quicker than any Ubu install I have tried.
Try
gksudo nautilus
That will give you a gui file manager with root permissions. You can then change permissions to your hearts content.
Be careful.
):P
I'll go one better.
Ubuntu isn't "stable", either.
No distro that rebuilds every 6 months can be described as "stable", in development terms.
I suggest downloading a bunch and trying them out. Keep in mind that a live cd will always run slower than a hard drive install.
Your list omits one of the best Debian/apt options...
Mepis. It...
If you are behind a router, it's going to require you to open a port in order to allow anyone in from the outside.
If you don't do that,
1) No one will be able to access your LAMP server...

RTEminds me of the old gag about the guy who says to his doctor;
"Doc, it hurts when I do this."
Doc says..."Well, don't do that!"
If there is no compelling reason to move up from 8.10...
DON'T!
Paste this into your address bar, and let us know what happens...

Ubuntu COULD make a bootable utility disk.
That's not what Ubuntu makes, however.
If you do a google search for disk recovery utilities, I feel sure you will find exactly what you have just...
What kind of server are you trying to run?
Just FYI, there is a difference between a switch and a hub. Hubs are usually less expensive, and will usually do whatever you need to do on a small lan.
cat doesn't scroll up and down. Try less instead.
That site works ok on my buntu netbook. Post your system specs. Might be a driver issue,
