Wishful thinking....this is what happened when I uninstalled the latest package and installed the Lucid package in it's place. Then I lost control of the touchpad completely :)

Solved. Because the EEEPC is a netbook, there was a program called Maximus running in the Startup. Un-selecting this program causes the buttons to display on maximized windows.
