This was very bad advice, as it made my computer unresponsive.
Well I've been browsing about this for a long time now and I don't think anyone else has re-purposed a machine for use as a display only. I've tried out screenlets but nothing seems to be adequate...
Conky looks cool, but there are no screenlets powerful enough for what I want to do. Is there a place where better screenlets are?

yup got it.
The server needs to have both the public and private keys for the fingerprints to match when the client logs on.

just to clarify the public key fingerprint on the openssh server is the same as the private key fingerprint on the putty client.
And I've also tested this behavior on another linux box I have...
ssh-keygen -l -f /etc/ssh/ssh_host_rsa_key.pub
