Have you not seen the ubuntustudio usplash. That is much better looking. But isn't splashscreen for non-geeks :P Text information is much more usable :)

Are you running compiz? Did you run it before it happened? Your window decorator seems to have gone.
If you have a nvidia card you can try this :
sudo nvidia-xconfig --add-argb-glx-visuals...
It was about the same with my girlfriend too. She bought her first "real" computer a couple of years ago and I loaded ubuntu onto it. The shrunk xp partition is never used.

Use torrents and everything will be great. If everybody uses torrents and seeds you will get the same speed anyway.
You can also in the preferences for nautilus. Choose "include delete" option. That way you can delete files permanently without holding shift.
gegl is so much faster. It's a joy to sharpen pictures and use other plugins. I feel like having a new super fast computer =D>
